Lévy's 1998 interview apparently gave rise to a new variant of the "Marian" anecdote. Ĭarlo Curti Gialdino (2005) has reconstructed the design process to the effect that Heitz's proposal contained varying numbers of stars, from which the version with twelve stars was chosen by the Committee of Ministers meeting at Deputy level in January 1955 as one out of two remaining candidate designs. He wanted to do national flags incorporating the Council of Europe flag. He wanted to do the European currencies with 15 stars in the corner. Arsène Heitz, who was an employee in the mail service, put in all sorts of proposals, including the 15-star design. I did, and I calculated the proportions to be used for the geometric design. To the question "Who really designed the flag?" Lévy replied: In an interview given 26 February 1998, Lévy denied not only awareness of the "Marian" connection, but also denied that the final design of a circle of twelve stars was Heitz's. Lévy, then Director of Information at the Council of Europe responsible for designing the flag, in a 1989 statement maintained that he had not been aware of any religious connotations. Heitz also made a connection to the date of the flag's adoption, 8 December 1955, coinciding with the Catholic Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He claimed that the circle of stars was based on the iconographic tradition of showing the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Woman of the Apocalypse, wearing a "crown of twelve stars". In 1987, following the adoption of the flag by the EC, Arsène Heitz (1908–1989), one of the designers who had submitted proposals for the flag's design, suggested a religious inspiration for it. Statue of the Blessed Virgin in Strasbourg Cathedral (1859) Arms of monk and priest Prosper Guéranger (1805–1875) Their number is invariably twelve, the figure twelve being the symbol of perfection and entirety. The Council of Europe gave the flag a symbolic description in the following terms, though the official symbolic description adopted by the EU omits the reference to the "Western world": Īgainst the blue sky of the Western world, the stars symbolise the peoples of Europe in a form of a circle, a sign of union. Originally designed in 1955 for the Council of Europe, the flag was adopted by the European Communities, the predecessors of the present European Union, in 1986. The flag used is the Flag of Europe, which consists of a circle of twelve golden stars on a blue background. The blazon given by the EU in 1996 describe the design as: "On an azure field a circle of twelve golden mullets, their points not touching." Symbolism The flag is used by other European entities, such as unified sport teams under the rubric Team Europe. 5224) their attachment to the flag as an EU symbol. On the other hand, 16 EU members that year, plus France in 2017, have officially affirmed (by Declaration No. Mention of the flag was removed in 2007 from the text of the Treaty of Lisbon, which was ratified. Its adoption as an official symbol was planned as part of the 2004 European Constitution but this failed to be ratified. Nevertheless the flag has to date received no status in any of the EU's treaties. Official EU use widened greatly in the 1990s. Adoption by the EU, or EC as it then was, reflected long-standing CoE desire to see the flag used by other European organisations. Since 1985, the flag has also been a symbol of the European Union (EU), whose 27 member states are all also CoE members, although in that year the EU had not yet assumed its present name or constitutional form (which came in steps in 19). It was designed and adopted in 1955 by the Council of Europe (CoE) as a symbol for the whole of Europe. His service saw him showered in praise, earning him several mentions in despatches, an appointment to the role of Companion of the Order of the Bath and a promotion to the role of lieutenant colonel. As per the norms of the time, he burned farmsteads as part of a scorched earth policy and rounded up Boer women and children to send to British-run concentration camps. Haig escaped the town of Ladysmith on the last train before it was besieged by the Boers, and went on to command a cavalry brigade, and later an all-arms force and column. It has become known as one of the most destructive wars fought by the British: the brutal conflict saw the implementation of scorched earth policies and the introduction of internment camps (also referred to as concentration camps) with extremely high mortality rates. Photograph of the young Douglas Haig as an officer with the 7th Hussars. He was promoted to the position of brevet major on his return to England in 1898. Haig was, at least in part, there to report on Kitchener, who he had plenty of criticism for. He saw plenty of action and commanded a squadron of his own, launching several important attacks and offensives. In 1898, he was hand-picked to join Lord Kitchener in a campaign in the Mahdist War in Sudan: Haig was required to join the Egyptian Army (a formality) in order to serve. He eventually earned a promotion to captain before returning to England. In his early years as an officer, Haig was stationed in India. He travelled a lot in his early years as an officer He passed – placing first in the order of merit – and was commissioned as a lieutenant into the 7th Hussars in February 1885. He decided to train as a British Army officer at the military academy, Sandhurst, following his final exams. He studied in Scotland, Clifton College in Bristol and later at Brasenose College, Oxford.Īt Oxford, Haig showed sporting prowess and was a member of the infamous Bullingdon Club. He had a privileged upbringingīorn in Edinburgh, the son of a whisky baron and gentry, Haig had a thorough education. Here are 10 facts about Douglas ‘Butcher’ Haig. However, Haig had a long and distinguished military career prior to World War One, and he continued to campaign for ex-servicemen long after he had retired. Unsurprisingly, his legacy has been somewhat mixed as a result. He presided over both the best and worst days of the war for the British Army, earning him praise as the ‘man who won the war’ as well as the nickname ‘Butcher Haig’. Field Marshal Douglas Haig’s name is inextricably linked to World War One: he headed up the forces on the Western Front for nearly 3 years, achieving monumental losses alongside, ultimately, victory. Short of the story is that, I am stuck here, I need my FPGA to be visible in the lspci list without restarting the linux. Here it is mentioned that the fakephp driver was removed from mainstream linux since PCI core has similar functionality, but he never mentioned how. modprobe fakephp worked and driver loaded but somehow I didn't get this fake device in my device list. After solving a couple of deprecated function problems, it is compiled for Linux Kernel v5.4. For that I took the fakephp.c driver from an old linux repo and ported it to ours. I also learned that there was a method in old linux times (v2.6) called adding a Fake PCIe Device which physically doesn't exist to solve this problem. Or there is no device or bus to set power off and on back like echo 0 > /sys/bus/pci/slots/./power But the rescan command never does that.Īlso in the system there is no pcie device to execute echo 1 > $pcidevice/remove in order to make rescan functional. But I couldn't find a solution for this so far.Īccording to the Texas Instrument support forum, they said if the PCIe link is not trained at the boot time, rescan command never works.Īt the boot time, while linux loads a pci driver, it tries to establish a PCIe link, I can see that with an oscilloscope, PERST pin is asserted and PCIE_CLK generated for a while and then stops if it can not detect any device. Somehow I need to tell the linux that whatever it's doing at the boot time, please do it again at runtime. With Bvckup 2, there aren’t any cloud services involved, there’s no file versioning, and it won’t compress any folders. Rebooting the linux is not an option for us. In this review, I will be telling you why Bvckup 2 is possibly the simplest and easiest unidirectional file synchronization you will ever have used and yet, it still packs a punch. When I first execute echo "1" > /sys/bus/pci/rescan as suggested here and here and then lspci, I still get nothing.īut if I reboot the linux without reseting the FPGA, it starts being visible in the lspci list. Its not as bad as it may sound, however enumerating files doesnt give you their security descriptors. but then it means that the app needs to rescan the source to understand what changed. Once the Linux is fully booted, we configure the FPGA and only after that it starts acting as a PCIe endpoint (device).Īt this point, when I run lspci -> it returns nothing. I will make bvckup itself expand such variables if they are present in pre/post-command line, but this will be in the next version. When we power up the board, the FPGA is not yet configured, so it acts as if it was not on the PCIe bus. This board has one PCIe bus and that one is connected to an FPGA. We have an embedded board that has an iMX8M-Plus Processor and Linux v5.4.161. I see that my secretary addressed the telegram to your father instead of to you, having taken his name from your letterhead. It is signed by competition adviser George Howe and includes this postscript: “p.s. They were happy first for the father and then for the son.’’Ī copy of the letter sent to Eero Saarinen afterward is filed with competition correspondence in the Park Service archives. The Saarinens apparently took the mix-up in stride, Moore said. In an unfortunate bit of confusion, the congratulatory telegram announcing the first-round success was sent to Eliel by mistake. Eliel also entered the competition, but his entry was eliminated in the first round. The semifinalists were each awarded $10,000 and invited to revise their designs for the second round of competition that would be decided in February 1948.Īt the time of the competition, Eero Saarinen, 38, worked for his father Eliel Saarinen, a well-known architect who led the Cranbrook Institute of Architecture and Design near Detroit. The jurors deliberated for four days, eventually agreeing on five designs. (Some illustrations in this story highlight sections of the complete drawingboards.) Moore said that each entry consisted of two boards - one showing a plan and elevation view and the other showing a prospective view or vignettes of what it would look like. The criteria called for an architectural memorial of some type reproductions of the types of buildings found in Old St. Moore says they were, in fact, meeting the competition’s guidelines, which required that certain elements be incorporated into the design. While Saarinen went BIG with his arch, many of the architects kept their eyes at ground level and focused on curious little elements like open-air campfire theaters and “villages” of French colonial houses. The tradition of earthier love songs survived in Spain, parts of North Africa, and the Middle East, however. (That’s the church basement where they put dead bodies.) Church leaders considered songs of human love “the devil’s handiwork.” They restricted composers to religious chants, prohibiting any words, rhythms, or music that might excite listeners into thinking of anything besides heavenly devotion. During this time, the religion of Christianity took hold there, and love songs were sent to the catacombs. This period lasted from the late 400s into the 1400s. In Europe during the Middle Ages, though, the tradition of lovey-dovey songs came under attack. (Totally and completely and nothing like today’s popular songs.
